Baking has been an important part of my adult life. I’ve collected stacks of handwritten recipes and old cookbooks over the years, gravitating towards dessert recipes because of what they represent: rather than encouraging nourishment, these recipes give precise instructions for achieving a fantasy. The photography in cookbooks of the 1960s and 1970s illuminated these fantasies with an artificiality and conceptual quality that I’ve come to appreciate.
With these ideas mind, I decided to make photographs to accompany some favorite dessert recipes. These images use each dessert as inspiration to travel on a flight of fancy, treating confection as a playground.
