Recipe Project (WIP)
Baking has been an important part of my adult life. I’ve collected stacks of handwritten recipes and old cookbooks over the years, gravitating towards dessert recipes because of what they represent: rather than encouraging nourishment, these recipes detail precisely measured ingredients and instructions for achieving a fantasy. The photography in cookbooks of the 1960s and 1970s illuminated these fantasies with an artificiality and conceptual quality that I’ve come to appreciate.
With these ideas mind, I decided to make photographs to accompany some of my favorite dessert recipes. These images seek to enlarge the naive flights of fancy of each dessert, taking the viewer to an impossible world where confection is a playground.
